History of BMW
BMW, or Bayerische Motoren Werke, formed in 1916 as an engine manufacturer of proprietary industrial and aircraft engines. It wasn’t until 1928 that BMW became an automobile manufacturer.
During WWII, BMW took a break from automobile manufacturing and devoted its resources to building aircraft engines. The first post-WWII car was the 501 with an enhanced version of the six-cylinder engine used in the pre-war 326. As a luxury car, it was not a commercial success. It would take nine years for the 1500 model to be released and re-establish BMW as a successful carmaker.
About The BMW Car Club of America
The BMW Car Club of America began in in 1969 in Boston, Massachusetts. In attempt to recruit members for the new car club, enthusiasts wandered the streets, leaving leaflets on the windshields of any BMW 2002s.
Their hard work paid off, and the first BMW CCA event was held a year later in Concord, Massachusetts. Oktoberfest 1970 featured just four events: rally, autocross, banquet and concours. Oktoberfest continues today, though at a much larger scale.
In 1975, the BMW CCA had reached 5,000 members – enough to support a full time executive director. Today, BMW CCA boasts 67 chapters nationwide, with more than 75,000 members. Out of the original 5,000, 308 active members remain.
